Main Responsibilities

Under the Authority of the Head of the ISS Exploitation Office, the ISS Programme Support Engineer responsibilities are as follows:

  • Support the organization the ESA ISS Mission Management Team meetings (MMT) and support follow-on of any special technical tasks as required by supervisor;
  • Support the ESA mission managers during ISS increment preparation and implementation activities;
  • Support the organization and implementation of the monthly ESA ISS Joint Mission Management Team Meetings (JMMT);
  • Maintain the action item tracking system and the programme preparation and implementation schedule;
  • Support Increment Preparation process for requirements definition, control, changes evaluation and CoFR for an assigned (or multi) Increment. This includes the participation to Operations Preparations Reviews (IIR, Pre-ORR, ORR, SORR etc..) for an assigned (or multi) Increment and the monitoring of Industrial progresses as outcome of these official review;
  • Support monitoring of the ESA ISS resources for tactical and strategic planning;
  • Support technical evaluation and disposition of NASA and ESA ISS Changes, including changes from Industrial contractor;
  • System Engineer for AIV phase for ISS System Developments and procurement;
  • System Engineer for small-size system development projects on the basis of tasks defined case-by-case from HRE-IDS (ISS System Development Unit);
  • Support system engineering and mechanical/structural engineering activities for IBDM development on the basis of tasks defined case-by-case from HRE-IDR and/or IBDM Management;
  • Configuration and documentation management for HRE-IDS projects, including preparation of engineering board(s) as needed.

The candidate shall provide engineering support to ESA project manager for system and mechanical aspects related to the Columbus  infrastructure sustainability and evolution items as described below. This will include day-to-day monitoring of the activities of the Industrial Contractors and review of technical documentation.

  • Support the establishment of the baseline for new items, from requirements up to and including the end item definition. Review and approval of Industry Specification level for equipment of the ISS Columbus module, and for post-ISS elements as required by hierarchical superiors.
  • Monitor industrial activities for the procurement/development and integration, test, verification of new or recurrent Columbus System equipment from structural, mechanical/thermal and configuration system aspects.
  • Monitor industrial activities for the procurement/development of the Columbus Terminal hosting platform in coordination with the other involved disciplines (Extra-Vehicular Activities, Human Factor, Thermal).
  • Support the organisation and conduct of  project reviews for system, structural, mechanical, budgets and configuration aspects.
  • Support the resolution of anomalies from ground and on-orbit activities in the system field.
  • Support Engineering Control board(s), MRBs, TRR/PTRs, VCB in the system and mechanical area.
  • Support the evaluation of Change Requests, Waivers and PIRNs in the system and mechanical area.
  • Other duties within the post holder’s area of competence as may be required by the hierarchical superiors in support of their activities.

Successful Candidate

The candidate should have an Engineering PhD or Masters in the relevant field along with minimum of 4yrs of work experience in the similar position.

  • Engineering or natural science degree or equivalent;
  • Experience in project management and coordination would be an asset;
  • Significant proven experience in System Engineering with focus on AIV Phase;
  • A good experience and knowledge of structural/mechanical/configuration design, development, testing and verification of requirements  for Human Spaceflight hardware.
  • A good knowledge of implications at system level of structural/mechanical/configuration aspects.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment (with other ESA organisations like Columbus Operations Division, and Technical Directorate and with Industry) and to follow a proactive attitude to solving problems.
